Temple Square

My parents are serving their third mission in the best place on earth (in my opinion), Salt Lake City, Temple Square!  They are only 40 minutes away and can visit us when "off duty."  We get to see them more now than when the are in Rexburg.  So, during Spring Break, while Luke was working in NYC, my sister Kristen and her daughters Hailey and Ashtyn came to visit from Colorado, and we all visited Mom and Dad in SLC.

We walked around Temple Square in the wind and rain, did a little shopping at the new City Creek mall, and got poured on, but it was so fun to be with family!

We didn't tell my boys Hailey was coming, but waited for her to surprise them at Mom and Dad's as they were giving us a tour of their apartment... out popped Hailey from a closet!  They were very excited and had fun playing with her for the rest of the weekend, while the rest of us girls had some great shopping, eating out, and "girl time."  It was a great end to our Spring Break.

River Wild

Left to right:  River guide (thought he was pretty funny entertaining us with Mormon jokes the whole time); Kim, my mother-in-law; Diane, my mom; Louis, my Dad; Morgan, Luke's youngest brother; Me; Bruce, my father-in-law; and Luke.

I recently came across this picture and decided it was too good to not be hanging up somewhere in my house.  So, in the process of framing it, I'm sharing it with you for a few reasons:

1.  This picture was taken almost 14 years ago about a week after our wedding, and the day before our reception in Maine.  14 years ago!!!  This was one of three boats in our group of family and friends.  I had never white water rafted, and was nervous, but it was really fun.  It was worth a little sunburn and soreness at the reception.

2.  My parents and in-laws are together.  Since this pretty much only happens at baby blessings and baptisms, it is unique to have a picture of the four of them together.  And my "dads" are in matching sweaters, so that is picture worthy in and of itself!

3.  Our expressions.  This cracks me up.  As you can see, some of us were enjoying it more than others.  Now that I think back on it, I can't believe my Dad did this.  He loves being on the water, but is more comfortable with a serene pond and reel in his hands then going down class 5 rapids!  And he didn't even complain (not that I can remember).

Our experience was relatively calm compared to another year that Luke and his brothers went and had near death experiences.   (In hindsight, I didn't mind so much that I had to sit that one out due to a newborn, nursing baby that year).

My Mom still talks about how good Kim looked on our way home with her cute, short, hair cut while my Mom and I felt like drown river rats!

And that is today's  little trip down memory lane.

Farewell to blankie

For those of you out there (if there is anyone out there... Blogging has taken a back seat lately and I don't know if there is anyone out there that still reads this), who know Colby, you probably know that he has been VERY attached to a certain "Blankie" for the past 3 1/2 years.

This is the first known picture of blankie to be documented.  Colby is 3 months old with said blankie, snuggling with Mimi and Camden in Maine.  Just a little of it is tucking out, but even then it became his favorite.

It started out as a regular baby-size blanket, and it was a gift from one of Luke's aunts.

As time went on, blankie had many adventures.  Occasionally it was left on the grocery store floor, only to be discovered missing as we were packing groceries in the car...Ah!  back to the store to face weird looks from the store clerk, but nonetheless, recovered on the floor in the dairy section.  Phew!

And many similar times forgot (but found again) at the library, in a snow drift, at family members houses, and at the church (and rescued from under our pew and returned by neighbors who knew the full importance of said blankie).

It wore thin and I repaired many holes. This picture was taken just after a mending session.  He was happy to get it back after watching the surgery.

Finally, I decided to cut it into three pieces so I'd always have another, just in case I lost one.  (I had looked online hoping to find a similar one, with no success).

A few months ago, I had an old cleaning rag sitting on the kitchen counter which Colby suspiciously eyed... and then asked me, "Is that blankie?"  You can see the resemblance above (dish rag on the left, last of blankie on the right) which led to Camden to refer to it as "D.D.R." for dirty-dish rag.

His preschool teacher even recently gave him the book "Owen"  about a little mouse that drags his blankie everywhere and the tactics his parents and neighbors use in trying to wean him from it.

Bit by bit, we lost all three pieces... the last to go just before this last New Years Eve.  I had braced myself for that day and so many people had said, "He will probably do better without it than you think".. and he did!  He accepted the fact when we told him we couldn't find it.

Well, about three days later, I found one of the missing pieces trapped in the downstairs couch (which has been the culprit of many missing toys).  However, at this point, I didn't want to re-introduce it.  He'd done so well and was less clingy without it, and we were all happy not to be on a constant chase to answer the daily question of, "Where's blankie?"

So... I hid the last remaining piece to one day show him again, maybe when he's a senior in high school and I'm sure he won't revert back to it.

And I thought the story of blankie was over... until my Mom called me a week ago to tell me about something she'd discovered while searching through some of my old things including a bag of old doll clothes.  She found the largest scrap of blankie that we had lost over a year ago (when I had been home visiting and going through a bunch of old boxes).  After that trip, we'd chalked up the disappearance to falling out of the car at a rest stop on the trip home from Idaho because we knew it hadn't come home with us from that trip, and Mom had searched and searched the house for it.

After she found it, she had almost sent it in the mail as a surprise... but I told her to hold on to it until we come next time so I can discreetly hide it.

It had a good, almost four year-run.  Now, Colby has gravitated to the always popular Tigger and a new friend named "Baby Sims" (whose name comes from a cat my aunt Shelley had long ago that Camden loved... so he then named a favorite stuffed animal of Mimi's that all the grandchildren love 'Sims',  and then Colby discovered a little stuffed cat that we've had kicking around the house for two years, and decided to name him "Baby Sims").

Here is Cobly reading a book to Baby Sims and Tigger.

He is the new "top cat" in our house.  He takes him everywhere and has brought home drawings that his nursery and preschool teachers have drawn with great detail about Baby Sims.

And that is the legend of Colby's blankie!

Ringing in the new year.

We spent New Years Eve singing and dancing the night away (literally).

Somehow the pictures of the adults dancing didn't make the cut (for your benefit as well as ours : )

Thanks Kim and Ashley for a great night!

HAPPY 2012!!!

Here are a few of my favorite pictures over the last week:

Jack and cousin Brady enjoying some fine dining (at Mc D's), before we walked through the lights at Temple Square.  Unfortunately this is the only picture I got of the night, but it was beautiful as always (and cold).

We spent Christmas weekend in Idaho with my parents and were happy to see my sister and her family and my brother and his family as well.  Here we are making sugar cookies Christmas Eve.

Hanging with cousin Kade.

Enjoying the new MP3.

Despite the lack of snow, we had a lot of fun outside, thanks to Grandpa's perfect ice.  Cam and Jack both tried out ice skates.  Jack thought if he had a skate on one foot and a boot on the other, he would be able to push off like he does on his scooter.  (That lasted about 5 minutes).

We had some great hockey games where each of us "bit the dust" more than we'd like to admit and realized we aren't as young as we used to be (thanks to the aching muscles).

Now we are back home.  Last Christmas was the year of the Nerf Guns.  This year is the year of the remote control cars.

We've got little cars, medium size, and big... and when they are all going at the same time they act crazy and control each other.  The boys love it.

Yes, Jack is actually controlling Colby's car.  This has trouble written all over it.

We've got in some good Lego and Battleship time.

Now one more week of vacation... the words to one of my favorite Christmas songs has new meaning to me this year, "And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again."
Yep, we are at that stage.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas.  Happy new year!

Thanksgiving fun

We had  GREAT thanksgiving week, visiting with both sides of the family. My sister Kim wrote a fun post describing our crafty fun, so I thought I'd link it here

My niece Hailey, sister Kristen, niece Ashtyn, niece Cheyenne and me showing off our cute head bands my Mom made.

New Family Pictures

We've never had great, professional family pictures, but this time around, I think these capture us perfectly.   Amber did an amazing job!

I love how she describes Colby (on her blog) as "a bit squirmy"... that was an understatement.  We were bribing him with all kinds of things, but luckily we got a few that turned out great.

Of course, by the end of the hour they were looking like this, but it was all worth it!

Oh yea, and I've been having fun with them already:
